Ezra was a bachelor preacher who lived in the 'gold country' of California in the town of Volcano. To supplement his income he worked as a watchman at a goldmine near his home. On June 25, 1881 while making his rounds he was fatally shot in the back by Indians who he caught in the act of removing 'tailings' from the mine. This material contained gold.
His gravestone which is in the Pine Grove, California cemetery is approximately 3 feet high and 4 inches thick of marble, and has on the round shaped top of the stone hands holding a rose. Near the top of the stone on the face is three intertwined links of a chain. The inscription reads Ezra DeGarmo died June 25, 1881 aged 48 years. Below this inscription is a 1-1/2 inch inlet of the world with wings embracing it and extending about 1-1/2 inches to either side. Ezra was living in Amador County California as early as 1860 in the town of Volcano. In 1860, the first record of him living in Amador County he was 26 years of age.
